Every time I chop onions, I cry like a baby! Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Haley W., Plymouth, MN
Hi Haley!
Crying can make chopping onions can be really painful for some of us. When you cut into them, a gas is released that can affect your eyes and cause tears. Over the years, I’ve heard all sorts of ways to remedy this, like running water, running the onion under water, chewing gum, or even breathing through your mouth. But if you want a surefire way to make sure you don’t cry—I say wear goggles! Even if it makes you look a little dorky, it’s totally worth it. They even make specific onion chopping goggles just for this purpose, but swim or ski goggles work well too. Cooking is supposed to be fun, never painful! Check out some of my onion chopping tricks in this clip.
Tear-free,
